Emotional Literacy Support Assistants

We are pleased to be able to offer our pupils sessions with our Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA)

ELSA's are specialised Teaching Assistants who have received training from educational psychologists to support the emotional development of children.  ELSAs help children learn to understand their emotions and respect the feelings of those around them.  ELSAs run sessions which provide children with the opportunity to explore their emotions, learn new skills and develop coping strategies.

An ELSA might work with children on:

  • Recognising emotions
  • Building self-esteem
  • Self confidence
  • Social skills
  • Friendships
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Parental deployment

ELSA sessions typically run for 6 weeks. There will be one session per week, which lasts for around 30 minutes. A typical session includes:

  • A warm up-game
  • A learning activity to support a specific area of need
  • A reflective activity

If you have any questions about ELSA sessions or would like to know more about how an ELSA can support your child in school, please get in touch with the school office.

ELSA Emotions Activities

In our ELSA sessions and Deployment club, we have been learning about our emotions.

We used the story of the colour monster to help us name our feelings.

We made biscuit faces to reflect the different emotions.
