British Values

What are British Values?

According to Ofsted, British values are:

  • Democracy
  • The rule of Law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith

BRITISH VALUES

At Elmsett, the teaching of British Values is promoted throughout the school and the curriculum.

The requirement for the school to prepare pupils for modern life with a focus on British values is part of the curriculum. As a Church school we have long been familiar with the need to articulate fundamental Christian values.

Both sets of values overlap and one can clearly argue that the government’s stated British values have emerged from Britain’s long history as a Christian nation.

The following document talks about Christian beliefs and values and how these are linked to British Values and the Bible.  It is a good prompt for thinking about how these values can be covered in school.  Click on the document here to find out more.

As part of the children’s learning they are able to use the form below as a whole class activity to identify where British Values are seen across the curriculum.
